MetaCab - The Story Begins

Now that I'm finally actually moving forward - not backwards, upwards - not forwards, and ever twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom, I figured I'd start a blog to log my progress on the project. So, until I get around to adding a section in my website, I'll be posting here to get stuff out there for all the legions of fans who are wondering what I'm doing when I'm not busy hanging with my family or friends.

To give some of the backstory, (perhaps the same backstory everyone who builds their own arcade machine), I grew up in the early 80's, when video arcades were still a huge deal and it seemed every restaurant, mall, store, etc had at least a few coin-operated arcade video games waiting to gobble your quarters in exchange for a few minutes of pixel-based bliss. I grew up eating Donkey Kong cereal, watching the Pac-man cartoon show, and aching to go to my friends' house to play on their Atari 2600. When I was about 5, I got my first computer, a Commodore 64. This let me play most of the arcade classics at home (in stunning graphics that put the Atari to shame).

Fast forward about 20 years and we have a guy done with college who's working full time, married, has his own house, and who still loves the classic games he grew up on. I don't have a Playstation/Xbox/GameCube/etc, and probably won't any time soon since I don't have the hours it takes to make it through today's challenging games. Back in the early days of gaming, the average game lasted only a few minutes, so that's why I thought to find my roots and pay homage to them in the form of a Do-it-yourself upright arcade cabinet.
